The professorship Urban Intelligence was nominated as finalist in the World Smart City Award 2017 for the most innovative (cycling) mobility idea. With Cyclespex, the Virtual Reality Cycle EXperience simulator, the professorship evaluates smart city cycling with the active engagement of local cycling communities.

The Smart City Expo World Congress took place in Barcelona from 14-16 November 2017. The World Smart City Awards seek to reward pioneering projects, ideas and strategies that promote sustainable urban development around the globe. The unprecedented number of proposals received this year, 309 entries from 58 countries around the world, make it one of the biggest yet. Competitors could hand in their project in 7 categories: Innovative idea, project, circular economy, safe city, mobility, data & technology and city.

In the category of ‘innovative idea’ the city of Chicago eventually won with Marketplace.city – Helping Government Innovators Make Cities Smarter. Although the CycleSpex concept did not win, the achievement was one to be very proud of as recognition for the work at NHTV. If cities like Dubai, Rio de Janeiro and Amsterdam together with a company like Seat are the competition, it is already great standing on the same stage.
