The last years, Marco has been working on this complex research. After the ceremony, a restricted seminar will follow, honoring his research with further scientific presentations and epistemological debate.
PhD research: “The role of design in generating urban futures”
What does the future hold for us all? This question is so central to the life of every human being, yet scientifically impossible to answer. This difficulty stems from the fact that societies and cultures do not obey natural laws, like objects in physics or materials in chemistry. We, the people, construct our tomorrows together, in a constant process of co-creation.
This PhD looks at theories of innovation, futures research and philosophy of science in order to unveil insights and ideas about the ways how designers and design work to envision what is next for cities. It does so by analyzing, challenging and validating a long lasting corporate program of research and development, called city.people.light. Since 1996, Philips leveraged the power of professional networks and stakeholder dialogues to anticipate new concepts of lighting solutions and systems.
Aiming at putting people at the center of industrial and marketing processes, city.people.light integrates social studies, visual sketching and business strategies. The PhD project reviews this program from various viewpoints, including organizational management, the role of technology in shaping new products, and the role of the design director in reflexively generating theory as grounded in research.
Marco Bevolo will defend his PhD with the presence of Prof. Mommaas, Promotor, Prof. Em. Rijsman, Promotor, Dr. Bishop, Copromotor.
