IMEM alumnus won prize in Cannes

In June, IMEM alumnus Thijs van de Wouw and his team from AKQA won a Gold Lion. They did this in the category Innovative Use Of Social Media at the International Festival of Creativity in Cannes.

Thijs van de Wouw graduated in 2013 and is currently Senior Strategist at Droga5 (New York). Before that he worked at AKQA (San Fransisco) as the Global Strategy Lead for Activision (for games like Call of Duty, Destiny, Guitar Hero and Skylanders).

In his role as lead strategist, he was responsible for the strategy how to reveal the game in a way millions of fans would get excited. The strategy: why not reveal the new game where millions playing everyday? In the old game!

They invaded the most popular Call of Duty map of the old game with hidden clues about the new game. Players could chat to a hero of the new game on Facebook Messenger to find the answers. If they managed to unlock the code, they got to see the reveal trailer before everyone else – through Messenger. It was the first time a Messenger bot was used like that. Therefore, Thijs and his team got rewarded with a Gold Lion for Innovative Use of Social Media. Watch the full case study here.
